IC Information
Name: Rin Matsuoka
Canon: Free!
Gender: Male
Age: 20. At his last canon point Rin is likely aged 18, but his death is set two years after the end of Eternal Summer.
History: Splash!
Personality: Rin has always been passionate and intensely competitive. From his childhood spent at the Iwatobi Swim Club and elsewhere, Rin has always concerned himself with winning rather than simply enjoying the water. While he is very focused on victory, Rin considers his friends and his team to be an integral part of his swimming experience.

Rin's second year in high school, his first year returned from school in Australia, caused a great deal of emotional duress for the boy. He had formed a deep bond with Haruka, Makoto and Nagisa at the Iwatobi Swim Club and, at the time of his departure, his priority was "for the team", as he'd written on a brick in the school yard.

However, Rin interpreted a defeat by Haruka during a visit home to mean that his time in Australia was wasted. In reality, the loss was simply the straw that broke his back, as Rin had struggled making any progress or win any competitions abroad. This not only bruised his pride but made him consider his disconnection from his friends a waste. To this day he still does not deal well with losing.

Due to this conflict, Rin was desperately fixated on winning and on defeating Haruka to accomplish that. When he finally did achieve a satisfactory victory, Rin found himself unsatisfied and jealous of Rei, who he saw as a replacement for himself on his friends' swim team.

Eventually, Rin broke down with Haruka and explained his desire to swim with his friends. The encounter was heated, and Rin's emotional display was very unusual for him as he usually tries to be aloof. The conversation and Rei's prerogative won Rin the chance to race with his friends again, and his attitude has only improved since.

A great motivating factor for Rin initially had been his father's Olympic dream. His dad passed away due to a boating accident when he was young, and Rin attempted to carry his memory through pursuing his dream. However, Rin adopts this dream into being his own dream, and still works to follow it.

Rin is not good with his feelings. He often misunderstands them himself and focuses on the distraction of swimming or competition in general to push past anything that may be upsetting him. He does have a quick temper, however, and is easily annoyed or pushed to raising his voice. Frustration comes easily to Rin in all ways. He gets frustrated with himself and with his friend when they under-perform or have a counterproductive attitude. If Rin doesn't know how to express an emotion he is experiencing, it will likely come out as anger.

In his final year of high school his friends and his team have become and remain Rin's priority. He takes his captain position seriously, and prioritizes the performance of his team and the well-being of its members with careful balance. Rin was nervous initially about being put in a position of authority, but he has since grown comfortable with his role as a mentor.

Heavy handed concern is second nature to Rin, as he applies the same strict expectations to himself and his friends. He has their best interest in mind, and is often a voice of reality to those who need it, but he can easily come off aggressive and confrontational.

Rin's frustration and mentor abilities both shine when it comes to Nitori. He was easily frustrated by the boy in his second year of high school, only to come to support him with strict yet kind encouragement in his year as captain. He genuinely cares for Nitori's improvement and well being, and understands that this is very much a mutual feeling.

Makoto and Rin had been much closer in elementary school, and drifted due to Rin studying abroad and his fixation on Haru. Recently, they have reconnected, and Rin seems to be very concerned about his friend's comfort and future. On numerous occasions Rin has spoken directly to Makoto about these issues. He may have been only exacerbating Makoto's stress, but Rin didn't seem to notice. Even if it had, it is possible he would have considered it an important enough consideration to merit the discomfort of the conversation.

Nagisa and Rin used to share a very similar energy level, though now he seems to think that the younger boy doesn't take his swimming seriously enough. This has been a point of annoyance for Rin, though as time went on it may have grown somewhat into a point of endearment. Rin was initially very jealous of Rei, and considered him an outsider. He was upset and betrayed that Rei so easily replaced him in the Iwatobi group. When Rei showed concern for Rin he was confused, which manifested in anger. Rei allowing Rin to swim in his place at a tournament, however, helped Rin find himself and his goals once more. Rin is very aware of how much he owes Rei, and treats him well. He has accepted him as a good friend.

Rin is very protective of his sister, Gou, and is very staunchly against anyone dating her. He gives Momotaro the strict hand of discipline he needs.

Sousuke and Rin are very old friends, and Rin believes that no one understands him better than Sousuke. That fact can drive them to conflict, and has made Rin uncomfortable on more than one occasion, but he still counts Sousuke among one of his dearest friends. He relaxes easily around him, and is ready to confide in him if necessary. While Sousuke understands Rin, the opposite is not always true. Rin is ignorant to the level to which Sousuke cares and, for a long while, to the injury the other has suffered. When Rin discovers that Sousuke's shoulder may prevent him from pursuing his swimming career he cries. Their friendship means a great deal to him, and the potential of them continuing together as he'd thought being stripped destroys him. So much so, that Rin cannot accept such an ending. He urges Sousuke to push on, perhaps against impossible odds. Rin is a great motivating factor for his friends in general, and his dissatisfaction with Sousuke's resignation is one display of him not allowing anyone close to him to give up.

Haruka is one of Rin's greatest friends, despite their rocky history. Rin always viewed Haru as a worthy rival, picking him out of his other teammates to focus on due to Haru's skill level. Having someone to compete directly against only fueled Rin's focus on swimming when they were young, and he treasured their relationship. He returns from Australia with not a focus but a fixation, an obsession with Haru's performance and their own rivalry. He considers it then, however, to be holding him back, and attempts to surpass it by defeating Haru and swearing that he will never swim with him again. This conclusion only depressed Rin further, however, and after grappling with his own pride and priorities he came to terms with what he wanted: to swim as friends again. In Rin's third year of high school, he is still very focused on Haru has a friend and a rival. Their relationship lacks the brooding tension it was consumed by the year prior. Instead, Rin grows concerned with Haruka's future. He brings it up often, and with a heavy hand, possibly smothering his friend with expectations. Rin does not understand his actions could be harmful, however, as he typically thinks others function the way he does and thus respond well to competitive stress.

Powers/Abilities: Rin isn't capable of anything inhuman, however he is incredibly physically fit. He excels at swimming, his specialties being short distance freestyle and butterfly sprints.
Keepsakes/Mementos:
-The picture of his father and his father's relay team that he carried with him through all of season 1 and relinquished to Gou in season 2.
-His goggles and swimsuit (a pair of black legskins with red accents) and/or his Samezuka track jacket.
-The trophy that he and his friends won before he left for Australia.

Sample: Rin eyed the scale display as an attendant hefted his suitcase to be weighed. He breathed a small sigh of relief, it was barely under capacity. Buying everyone presents had been such a pain this year. He'd bought a trinket or two per person, but his number of friends had grown since last time he'd returned home for the holidays.

Walking through the airport was like going down a familiar path, except what had previously been grey and full of motionless figures was now vibrant with color and lively people all embarking on the same journey as him. So many of them were going to see their families, their friends, and their loved ones soon. Rin included. He gripped his duffle bag tighter.

"Mommy!"

A boy no more than 9 years old sped by him. The boy jumped into his mother's arms, his father standing to the side. They were all beaming. Rin smiled too. Perhaps he'd looked sad, because the boy caught his eyes and cocked a happy grin. Rin's expression lightened as he felt constriction leave his chest.

He'd be home soon.

Not that Rin would run. Probably. His friends were probably too busy to pick him up anyway. It'd just be Gou, and she'd get an arm around her shoulders in greeting. Tinsel, wreaths and holiday music surrounded him, but it wouldn't be the holidays for him until he was with his sister.

Rin sat in the waiting area and pulled his duffle bag onto his lap. He turned his iPod up, skipping several songs before leaning back in the chair and closing his eyes. His mind wandered easily when he was stuck waiting, and the excitement twisting in his gut only made it wander more. He thought of Haru first - the boy with the cold face. It would heat up when they saw each other, Rin was certain. Then Makoto would smile, life filling his drooping eyes. The two of them had been with him for so long; they'd held his hand when he'd needed it most and he'd pulled them into the future. Too many New Years had gone by without them.

He nestled a finger behind the strap of his cap and pulled at the band.

Nagisa and Rei would smile. Their energy was impressive and could be exhausting, but Rin found himself enjoying it more every year. He'd shout, he'd gripe, he'd grumble, but he'd laugh and smile and hug everyone all the same.

He was sure to see his team too. Momotaro, Ai and maybe even his former captain. The three of them put Nagisa and Rei to shame in the annoying energy department. Rin could have felt drained just thinking about it, if he hadn't remembered Momotaro's face when he'd handed him a boomerang. This year he'd found something less tempting to throw.

An ache settled in his shoulders and Rin shifted, rolling his head from side to side to crack his neck.

Sousuke would be there too. Rin's eye twitched and he skipped to the next song. Imagining himself walking up to his old friend, throwing their handshake and laughing was like imagining a blue sky. Their traditions were as strong as Rin's holiday homecoming, and they would all play out this visit as they always did. He skipped another song. Despite how he knew seeing Sousuke's smile would bring him comfort, he was restless. Sousuke needed to swim.

"Now boarding flight 408."

The announcement cut off Rin's thoughts and he rose automatically. Music was the only thing in his head as he stepped onto the plane and took his seat on the aisle. A girl about his age sat to his left, and a nervous looking middle aged man in the window seat was fidgeting with the shutter.

Ten hours of flight time never grew any less dull. Rin gazed out the window across the aisle as they took off. The bass of his music blended with the low rumble of the engines and he couldn't help but smile. That sensation was the first of many familiarities that he'd soon be welcoming.

Rin drifted in and out of sleep throughout the flight. He'd wake up to take water and food from the flight attendant, passing things down his row with awkward care. His headphones were beginning to sting his ears, but Rin simply shifted in his seat and let his head lull into comfort.

BANG!

A loud noise and a searing pain in his head jerked Rin awake. He'd bashed his forehead into the upright tray. There was no blood, that was the first thing he'd checked. His ears were ringing. What was happening? The plane jerked, and Rin rushed to stabilize himself in his seat. An ear-bud cracked under his foot.

For some reason it hurt to lift his head, and when he did he wished he hadn't. Rin saw smoke. Black smoke consumed the front of the plane and was billowing all around them. Everyone was panicking. The girl next to him clawed at the ceiling for the emergency mask while the man in the window seat was hunched over, mumbling. Rin ripped his seat-belt off. His fingers ached.

The lights flickered. Only one came back on and fought for life. Every time it managed to light up, Rin felt a burst of hope. Then it stopped. The sun was the only thing lighting the cabin now, and it's rays seemed to prefer the smoke filling the chamber to the people within.

What did you do in a situation like this? What could you do? Rin saw three men putting on the few masks that did manage to drop. He saw a woman ripping her floatation device from the bottoms of her seats. It wouldn't work. They were too high. The plane was falling. Rin tripped backwards over himself as the plane tilted forward. The chain on his pants floated to his side.

Everything was silent for a moment.

Suddenly he could see the ocean.

The front of the plane was gone. Passengers and debris scattered as everything fell. Rin couldn't scream. He could barely breathe. He scrambled backwards in the aisle and dug his grip onto the bottom welding of the seat. There was no time to think about his friends or his dream.

All he could do was imagine himself in the water. Smiling and safe.

No.

All he could do was hope he felt the splash before he died.

Rin fell unconscious just seconds before he hit the sea.

Mindset: Rin is not at peace with his death. Since it was so sudden and completely out of his control, he has a lot of anger and bitterness and nowhere to direct it. In this state, Rin is incredibly volatile and tends to either cut himself off or lash out with an even shorter temper than normal. He will remember the entire ordeal and the experience will be very fresh in his mind.

The computer setting will be strange to Rin, but he will likely be preoccupied by his death and the deaths of any friends to develop any strong first impressions of the system.

G̶̶l̨͡i̵͢t̷c͝͠h̕é͠s̷̷͡: Since Rin will be dying via plane crash, anything associated with airplanes, air ports or general air travel will likely get to him. The ocean was never special to him, but now that he's died over it, Rin likely has some disdain or minor anxiety associated with it.

Anything associated with swimming will also be a major issue for Rin. His future was stolen from him, and so he regards the sport bitterly. This is not to say he won't participate in it, but he has a hard time seeing the point since there is no reward for improvement or victory.

Rin does not respond much to typical horror tropes. He is far more likely to be disturbed by things that tug at his emotions. He is prone to episodes of depression, and even if he is in a healthy state of mind, can be upset by the state of his friends.

So far as abstract concepts go, Rin is disturbed by apathy, failure, futility, and immobility.
