Personality: Rin has always been passionate and intensely competitive. From his childhood spent at the Iwatobi Swim Club and elsewhere, Rin has always concerned himself with winning rather than simply enjoying the water. While he is very focused on victory, Rin considers his friends and his team to be an integral part of his swimming experience.
Rin's second year in high school, his first year returned from school in Australia, caused a great deal of emotional duress for the boy. He had formed a deep bond with Haruka, Makoto and Nagisa at the Iwatobi Swim Club and, at the time of his departure, his priority was "for the team", as he'd written on a brick in the school yard.
However, Rin interpreted a defeat by Haruka during a visit home to mean that his time in Australia was wasted. In reality, the loss was simply the straw that broke his back, as Rin had struggled making any progress or win any competitions abroad. This not only bruised his pride but made him consider his disconnection from his friends a waste. To this day he still does not deal well with losing.
Due to this conflict, Rin was desperately fixated on winning and on defeating Haruka to accomplish that. When he finally did achieve a satisfactory victory, Rin found himself unsatisfied and jealous of Rei, who he saw as a replacement for himself on his friends' swim team.
Eventually, Rin broke down with Haruka and explained his desire to swim with his friends. The encounter was heated, and Rin's emotional display was very unusual for him as he usually tries to be aloof. The conversation and Rei's prerogative won Rin the chance to race with his friends again, and his attitude has only improved since.
A great motivating factor for Rin initially had been his father's Olympic dream. His dad passed away due to a boating accident when he was young, and Rin attempted to carry his memory through pursuing his dream. However, Rin adopts this dream into being his own dream, and still works to follow it.
Rin is not good with his feelings. He often misunderstands them himself and focuses on the distraction of swimming or competition in general to push past anything that may be upsetting him. He does have a quick temper, however, and is easily annoyed or pushed to raising his voice. Frustration comes easily to Rin in all ways. He gets frustrated with himself and with his friend when they under-perform or have a counterproductive attitude. If Rin doesn't know how to express an emotion he is experiencing, it will likely come out as anger.
In his final year of high school his friends and his team have become and remain Rin's priority. He takes his captain position seriously, and prioritizes the performance of his team and the well-being of its members with careful balance. Rin was nervous initially about being put in a position of authority, but he has since grown comfortable with his role as a mentor.
Heavy handed concern is second nature to Rin, as he applies the same strict expectations to himself and his friends. He has their best interest in mind, and is often a voice of reality to those who need it, but he can easily come off aggressive and confrontational.
Rin's frustration and mentor abilities both shine when it comes to Nitori. He was easily frustrated by the boy in his second year of high school, only to come to support him with strict yet kind encouragement in his year as captain. He genuinely cares for Nitori's improvement and well being, and understands that this is very much a mutual feeling.
Makoto and Rin had been much closer in elementary school, and drifted due to Rin studying abroad and his fixation on Haru. Recently, they have reconnected, and Rin seems to be very concerned about his friend's comfort and future. On numerous occasions Rin has spoken directly to Makoto about these issues. He may have been only exacerbating Makoto's stress, but Rin didn't seem to notice. Even if it had, it is possible he would have considered it an important enough consideration to merit the discomfort of the conversation.
Nagisa and Rin used to share a very similar energy level, though now he seems to think that the younger boy doesn't take his swimming seriously enough. This has been a point of annoyance for Rin, though as time went on it may have grown somewhat into a point of endearment. Rin was initially very jealous of Rei, and considered him an outsider. He was upset and betrayed that Rei so easily replaced him in the Iwatobi group. When Rei showed concern for Rin he was confused, which manifested in anger. Rei allowing Rin to swim in his place at a tournament, however, helped Rin find himself and his goals once more. Rin is very aware of how much he owes Rei, and treats him well. He has accepted him as a good friend.
Rin is very protective of his sister, Gou, and is very staunchly against anyone dating her. He gives Momotaro the strict hand of discipline he needs.
Sousuke and Rin are very old friends, and Rin believes that no one understands him better than Sousuke. That fact can drive them to conflict, and has made Rin uncomfortable on more than one occasion, but he still counts Sousuke among one of his dearest friends. He relaxes easily around him, and is ready to confide in him if necessary. While Sousuke understands Rin, the opposite is not always true. Rin is ignorant to the level to which Sousuke cares and to the injury the other has suffered.
Haruka is one of Rin's greatest friends, despite their rocky history. Rin always viewed Haru as a worthy rival, picking him out of his other teammates to focus on due to Haru's skill level. Having someone to compete directly against only fueled Rin's focus on swimming when they were young, and he treasured their relationship. He returns from Australia with not a focus but a fixation, an obsession with Haru's performance and their own rivalry. He considers it then, however, to be holding him back, and attempts to surpass it by defeating Haru and swearing that he will never swim with him again. This conclusion only depressed Rin further, however, and after grappling with his own pride and priorities he came to terms with what he wanted: to swim as friends again. In Rin's third year of high school, he is still very focused on Haru has a friend and a rival. Their relationship lacks the brooding tension it was consumed by the year prior. Instead, Rin grows concerned with Haruka's future. He brings it up often, and with a heavy hand, possibly smothering his friend with expectations. Rin does not understand his actions could be harmful, however, as he typically thinks others function the way he does and thus respond well to competitive stress.
Abilities/Weaknesses: Rin is your average human in that he has no supernatural powers or unnatural traits. He isn't your average human in that he is extremely physically fit and a skilled swimmer. Rin is dedicated to his sport, and is constantly training and seeking to improve himself. He also shines in a leadership position, and stressful situations typically encourage him to perform better rather than flounder. Rin takes on responsibility well.
Emotions are a very difficult concept for Rin. He feels frustration and anger very well, as well as the rush of competition. Anything other than that, and he struggles to understand let alone express himself. He is a person who will act first and think later, internalizing any mental consequences thereof.
In the sexual arena, since this is a sex game, Rin has no experience. He is still a teenage boy, so he's not without personal time or rampant fantasies or explicit dreams. However, he's extremely dedicated to his sport and his daily routine of fitness, so he hasn't had any time for dating. He may or may not be interested in some of his friends, but the pool is the priority.

Rin glared at the hot spring. Then the sign next to it. Who the hell thought this would be funny? It was like some gradeschooler prank, except the content of the sign was too sexual in nature for that to be possible.
'Fuck Your Buddy Hot Springs!'
It wasn't exactly a warning to keep out. A 'no trespassing' sign, he would have understood, but not this. What was it supposed to mean!? Was it supposed to dissuade people from jumping into the baths? Was it supposed to encourage people to jump into the baths? Rin had no idea, but either way he knew it pissed him off.
He was sorely tempted to kick it down. No matter who put it there, it was obviously meaningless. But on the off-chance that the property owners were the insane assholes who put it up, Rin left the damn thing standing.
The boy sidestepped the offending piece of wood with a final scowl. Rin shrugged off his jacket and track pants, letting the clothing rest in a heap next to the spring's edge. It had been days since he touched water. He wasn't Haru - it didn't make him feel like he was apart from some long lost family member or however Haru's brain worked. It did make him stink. Rin needed a bath. The hot springs had been the easiest thing to find. He'd been able to follow signs instead of talk to any of the people populating the strange town.
Rin dipped his toes in first, testing the temperature before sitting on the side, letting his calves soak for a moment. It was then he heard a voice. It was a male voice, but he couldn't place it. The voice came again, and it sounded like it was being carried on the wind, though the air was still around him. Rin looked around, tense and ready to chew into whoever was sneaking up on him.
He saw a shape on the other end of the pool.
"Haru...?" He squinted. No? "Sousuke...?" Rin couldn't make the man out, but it had to be one of them, and suddenly he was desperate to get closer. He splashed urgently into the hot spring. The minute he hit the water something pulled him under, and Rin gasped, air precious bubbling from his mouth. He strained his eyes open, but there was no one beneath him. He looked up. There was a hand reaching into the water. Not to help him, but to run fingers down his chest.
Rin grabbed for it. He missed, but the motion seemed to free him, and he was able to surface. Rin immediately looked around, searching for the assailant.
He was alone.
